The mural was conceived by Bill Wilson, the director of CoMMA at the time and commissioned by The Burke Endowment for the Arts. The project took three months to complete, with Long and his students working 40 hours a week, painting on the ceiling. The piece features the 9 muses, Greek figures who embodied music and theatre. In addition to the muses, Long included the comedy and tragedy masks as well as numerous people from his life including his teacher in Italy, some of his students and even himself. Brown Mountain Lights
Be one of the fortunate few to experience this centuries-old phenomenon that has intrigued residents and visitors and continues to confound scientific explanation. Described as a glowing ball of fire or a bursting skyrocket and sometimes as a pale almost white light. At times they seem to drift slowly, fading and brightening and at other times they seem to whirl like pinwheels, then dart rapidly away. Visible on clear nights from vantage points along N.C. 181 and from Wisemans View in the Lineville Gorge Wilderness area. From Morganton, travel 14 miles north on Highway 181 and the Brown Mountain Overlook will be located on the right hand side.

Amenities
From This Day Forward- Fred B. Cranford Amphitheatre
The History Behind the Drama: The Waldensians are a pre-reformation reformed sect of Christianity. They believed in the priesthood of all believers, translating the scripture into the "common" languages of the people of the day and encouraging education so that all people could read the Bible for themselves. A simple people, they were dedicated to taking care of the poor and justice for the oppressed. The Waldensian Community was excommunicated by the Catholic Church in 1184 at the Synod of Verona. Pope Innocent the 3rd went even further in 1215 declaring all Waldensians heretics. Forced to renounce their religious stances or flee, the small community of believers sought refuge in the Cottian Alps, where life was somewhat protected by the rugged landscape and isolation. Even so, the Waldenses were heavily persecuted by both the Catholic Church and the Reigning Monarchs throughout the region. Perhaps one of the bloodiest episodes in the history of their faith was in 1655 in a series of persecutions known as the Piedmontese Easter. In this series of massacres it is said that thousands of Waldensians were murdered for their faith. It is a mere 30 years later that our play begins. Total annihilation of the Waldensian Faith was the aim, yet throughout all the years of persecution, their faith remained and grew stronger. This is the backdrop to our story. The production is presented annually at the Fred B. Cranford Amphitheatre – mid July through mid-August.

Green Eggs and Jam
Hours
FROM VINYL RECORDS TO BOARD games, Geen Eggs and Jam has an eclectic assortment of oddities, all for sale. In 1994, Stacey Peek first opened the store in Asheville, North Carolina. He later relocated the shop to downtown Morganton. Peek has collected the unique items for sale at the store through friends, garage and estate sales, and his general knack for finding unusual objects.
His vast collection includes vinyl records such as Charles Manson’s “Walking In The Truth,” which Manson recorded in prison, and Jim Jones’s “Last Sermon at the Peoples Temple, Jonestown, Guyana.” The store also features a collection of ornaments, referred to as “(P)Ornaments,” and buttons, “Smuttons.” Creepy dolls peek out from under shelves and random religious art adorns walls alongside vintage band posters. Toys, action figures, board games, and other collectibles (such as a giant cigarette lighter) sit on stacks of DVDs and VHS tapes. A lone vintage projector huddles in the doorway of the record room and CDs are scattered throughout the shop. Several bookcases are filled with books on various subjects: biographies, history, art, film, true crime, fiction, magazines, and more. One bookcase is heaving under a mass of record players, tuners, and receivers.
In October 2022, Peek started the Brown Mountain Lights Festival in downtown Morganton planning to run the festival annually. The festival highlights local bands and artisans in Morganton and, according to the festival’s website, coincides with an extraterrestrial phenomenon known as “the lights” when blue orbs randomly appear “in the area of Brown Mountain [every year] since Earthlings have kept records.”
Peek can often be found sitting outside his store. - By Atlas Obscura

Historic Burke County Courthouse
Hours
Stepping into Burke County’s Historical courthouse is like stepping back in time. Originally constructed in 1837 it became the center of commerce and law of Morganton and much of western North Carolina. The state supreme court held trials here every August from 1847 to 1862 for the western part of the state. To this day it is one of only three places the State Supreme Court is allowed to hear cases (Raleigh and Edenton). In 1865 Stonewall Jackson Major General Stoneman occupied the courthouse and burned most of the records, saving the building because he admired the architecture. It continued to serve as the county courthouse through 1976 until the new courthouse in Morganton was completed. An effort to preserve the historic courthouse started in 1978, just two years later, and in 1984 it opened back up to the public as a museum and testament to the history of law in Morganton. Visitors can see a statue of Senator Sam Ervin as well as his desk in the museum as permanent remembrances of one of our most notable townspeople as well as many Revolutionary War pieces. The courthouse is the oldest in Western North Carolina and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Open Mon 9-2; Tuesday- Friday 9-3. Closed Weekends.

Little Guatemala
Hours
Little Guatemala is a family business based in Morganton, NC that serves as a bridge among neighbors in a diverse community. The population of Morganton has seen an influx in migrants over the past decades, including a significant number Guatemalans (around 20% of total population). This gives us a wonderful uniqueness as a community, and opportunities, but there are also many cultural barriers.
Christian and Erica Ramazzini have a bit of a start at overcoming some of those barriers in their marriage since they come from different cultures, and it is their desire that Little Guatemala will provide a place for others to make and build new friendships that may have been difficult otherwise.
The areas of Guatemalan culture that we will be sharing are natural connection-builders: coffee, chocolate, soccer, street food, and crafts. Get a unique craft and connect with the local Guatemalan artist. Join in pick-up games or soccer leagues to play side-by-side with others. Enjoy a coffee together afterwards! Walk down our inside “street” of local Guatemalan food vendors to get a delicious meal and engage the cook! This is going to be fun, y’all.
