2023 visitor impact for Burke County
County spending Increases by 3 percent to $137.75 Million
MORGANTON, N.C. — Domestic and international visitors to and within Burke County spent $137.75 million in 2023, an increase of three percent from 2022. The data comes from an annual study commissioned by VisitNC, a unit of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina.
Ed Phillips, C.E.O. of the Burke County Tourism Development Authority reports that visitors to the relocated Burke County Visitor Center are up 80% during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Phillips says the increased visibility of the new location has contributed significantly to the increase.

These statistics come from the “Economic Impact of Travel on North Carolina Counties 2023,” which can be accessed at partners.visitnc.com/economic-impact-studies. The study was prepared for Visit North Carolina by Tourism Economics.
Statewide, visitor spending in 2023 rose 6.9 percent to reach a record $35.6 billion. Direct tourism employment increased 4.8 percent to 227,224.
