Day Trip: Outdoor Adventure

Linville Gorge, North Carolina

Fly Fishing on Wilson Creek

Grab your gear and head to Table Rock Mountain for a day of climbing and hiking. Strap on your backpack and tame the Linville Gorge Wilderness area, the deepest gorge east of the Grand Canyon.

Head to the South Mountains and enjoy North Carolina's largest state park. Riding trails, waterfalls, primitive camping, hiking and an 18-mile mountain bike trek.

Lake James, North Carolina

South Mountains State Park

Load the boat and spend a day soaking up the sun and crystal cool waters of Lake James. No boat? No problem. You can rent one at Benfield's Landing.

Tie on the flies for wild trout waters throughout the northern and southern tips of the county, Wilson Creek and John's River. At the headwaters of the Catawba River near Glen Alpine, Special Regulation Water allows year-round casting. Wilson Creek Outfitters has all the gear you'll need.

Kayaking on the Catawba River

Table Rock Mountain, North Carolina

Challenge Brown Mountain OHV's 34 miles of well maintained trails. The only OHV area in Pisgah National Forest, it's just off Hwy. 181 North.

At the end of the day stop in downtown Morganton and enjoy a pint or two at the Catawba Valley Brewing Company or relax with friends at Yanni's.
